First 5 Humboldt playgroups continued to thrive this summer, offering a space for families to connect, learn, and play. Although some playgroups close for summer break, many remained open and welcomed strong attendance, continuing to be a valuable resource for children and caregivers alike.
Summer Highlights
This summer we saw some transition with the First 5 playgroup staff. Jennifer Gonzales transitioned out of her work with First 5 and playgroups to start the MSW program at Cal Poly Humboldt. This also brought two new Family Support Navigators to the First 5 Team: Rosa Guerrero-Gonzalez and Mary Douglas. We are so grateful and excited for Mary and Rosa to be joining the team, and also wish Jennifer all the best on her new adventure!
This summer playgroups were also packed with fun-filled activities, giving families the opportunity to engage in enriching experiences. Notable highlights of the summer months included:
- Music With José: North Coast Music Together with Jose Quezada continued to be a hit among playgroup families by bringing music, movement, and fun to children and caregivers.
- Themed Art Days: These events encouraged creativity, with children diving into different art projects based on exciting themes. These activities fostered connection between caregivers and children as well as development through play and creativity.
- Field Trips: Families also enjoyed field trips to various locations throughout Humboldt including: various Humboldt County Library locations, parks, Redwood Discovery Museum, and the Zoo. These trips not only provided a change of scenery but also allowed children to explore new environments.
Looking Ahead to Fall
With the summer season behind us, all First 5 Humboldt playgroups are now back in full swing, and we are excited to unveil new plans for the fall. A key focus for this season will be the introduction of theme months, where First 5 Humboldt Family Support Navigators will provide resources and information to support families on a range of topics, as well as have community partners visiting playgroups to also share information. Each month will focus on a different theme relevant to family health and child development, ensuring that families are equipped with valuable knowledge while still enjoying playgroup activities.
Some of the key themes families can look forward to include:
- Lead Prevention: Families will receive essential information on how to protect children from lead exposure, ensuring safe and healthy home environments.
- Developmental Milestones: Family Support Navigators will share insights on child development, helping parents recognize key milestones in their child’s growth and offering support if there are concerns.
- Oral Health: Promoting healthy smiles, the fall months will also feature discussions around oral hygiene for young children, emphasizing the importance of establishing good dental habits early on.
Playgroup Leader and Coordinator Support
Fall will also hold our biannual Playgroup retreat, where First 5 Playgroup staff and playgroup Leaders and Coordinators gather for a day to connect, share, and gain opportunity for professional development. This upcoming playgroup retreat agenda will cover topics such as activity and curriculum ideas, as well as reflective support to families.
First 5 Humboldt remains dedicated to providing a space where families can come together, have fun, and gain knowledge that supports their well-being. As we transition into fall, we look forward to continuing our mission of supporting Humboldt County families with meaningful activities and resources!
