First 5 Humboldt Symposium Recap: Resilience, Community Care, and Transformation in Family Services

The First 5 Humboldt annual symposium provided a powerful gathering of community members, family support workers, and early childhood professionals, focused on building resilience, strengthening community care, and creating transformational change in family services. Through a series of insightful workshops, discussions, and a keynote, participants explored critical themes around personal and professional wellness, organizational responsibility, and support for children and families.

One of the highlights of this year’s symposium was an in-depth examination of burnout and moral injury among those working in family support roles. Discussions tackled the impact of prolonged stress on mental health and the responsibility organizations hold in creating supportive environments. Attendees shared experiences, reflected on practices, and collaborated to brainstorm practical solutions to promote sustainability in their work.

The symposium encouraged active engagement through interactive elements. Attendees contributed to a collective puzzle, each person drawing on a puzzle piece to symbolize their unique contribution to the larger vision of community well-being. This exercise underscored the importance of unity and the role each individual plays in fostering a nurturing environment for families.

Throughout the event, there was an emphasis on actionable strategies for self-care, both for parents and practitioners, recognizing that resilient families are built by resilient caregivers and support networks. Attendees left with new tools, strengthened partnerships, and renewed motivation to continue their vital work in family support and early childhood development.

As we reflect on this impactful event, we look forward to ongoing collaboration, learning, and transformation in our community. Together, we are planting seeds for a brighter future for Humboldt County’s families.
