Over two years ago, Del Norte Road to Resilience Community Health Representative, Shawna Huggins, piloted our program’s first Cultural Activity gathering for families. This idea grew out of the desire to not only support and walk with families in their most vulnerable times but to also create healing spaces and opportunities for deeper wellness. These monthly Cultural Activity gatherings center Culture as a protective factor and uplift strengths that already exist for the families we serve. The Community Health Representatives make it special for families, and as soon as you walk in you can feel the joy and excitement of seeing familiar faces and begin or continue working on projects. We have been able to host and teach families beargrass braiding, doll dress making, round beading, and loom beading. During these gatherings, families are offered lunch, learn or practice a skill taught by our Community Health Representative or a community member, and hear from guests who share about different health topics that are generated by the families. It’s been beautiful to see friendships starting among families who attend, relationships deepening, finished projects and babies growing together in these gatherings. This addition to Road to Resilience is one that we are most proud of.
