As family support navigators, we play a vital role in helping families navigate the complexities of raising young children in today’s world. We regularly engage with caregivers at playgroups, actively listening to their concerns and providing guidance and resources. A recurring theme we’ve observed is the significant increase in caregiver stress stemming from the current political climate.
These stressors encompass a range of issues, from funding uncertainties for programs on which they rely or are employed by, to immigration-related anxieties and concerns regarding transgender rights. These anxieties can manifest in various ways, from worries about the future to disagreements about current events, significantly impacting individual well-being and family dynamics. It’s important to acknowledge that while some caregivers express distress, others view recent political changes as positive developments aligned with their values. These differing perspectives can create tension within families, communities, and playgroup attendees, highlighting the critical need for support and resources to navigate these complex issues. Critically, we must acknowledge the detrimental effects of caregiver stress on children’s well-being, regardless of political views. Research consistently demonstrates a correlation between caregiver stress and increased anxiety, behavioral challenges, and emotional difficulties in children.
Our approach to supporting families facing these challenges is three-fold. First, we foster supportive conversations within the playgroup setting, creating a safe space for caregivers to share their experiences, connect with others facing similar challenges, and feel heard and understood. Second, we offer practical Calming Together activities (in Spanish and English) focused on co-regulation. We invite families to practice these quick and fun exercises during calm moments with their children, making them readily accessible when stress arises. These exercises include sensory connection with nature through touch, smell, and even taste and include several breathing exercises to help regulate the nervous system. Third, we provide concrete community resources through our Red Folder. This living document contains valuable and up-to-date information on immigration policies, legal resources, and guidance on navigating difficult conversations with children in a developmentally appropriate manner. Through these combined efforts, we aim to equip caregivers with the tools and resources to thrive amidst uncertainty, fostering resilience and a sense of stability for their children.
